From seedlings or directly to a permanent place. The seeds should be grown in a cold and protected environment, only if it germinates it needs higher temperatures. At transplantation, we can shorten the root system, which makes it stronger, but the earth is mulched with organic mulch. Even if temperatures exceed 7 ° C, optimal temperatures for growth are around 20 ° C.


Among the rows at least 40 cm, between the plants in a row at least 10 cm, preferably 20.


Partial shade.

Date of sowing

January (seedlings) – June (wintering species). Sprouts two weeks.


With home compote, with fertilizer only if another plant is planted there. In the period of intense growth of the leaves, we fertilize further (compost, ash, nettles / consolidate concoction).


It needs a lot of water. Let’s water 20 cm deep twice a week. Even on the leaves, but in the morning.

Diseases and pests

Leek fly, tea bugs. Near the leek, we put yellow sticky plates, and when the first flies stick, cover the leek well (with bows over the plants) until October.


Many species can winter outdoor fate. The best thing is to store it in the garden, covered with earth, but in the fridge, it can resist for a few weeks. We keep it with the roots. We can also dry it or freeze it.


We use the white stem and the part of the green leaves. It even contains more vitamins and minerals than onions, but fewer antibiotic elements.


It needs light soil, so transplants are good for it. The low, stocky species of leek overwinter well. For the part of the large stem to be higher, we cover it up to the first leaves.

Special features

It is the only bulb plant that does not irritate the stomach. We can consume it throughout the year.
